  1. On November 28, 1960 Mauritania became independent.  In 1976 it
  2. annexed the south of former Spanish Sahara.  Saharan guerrillas
  3. stepped up attacks in 1977 and 8,000 Moroccan troops with French
  4. bomber raids aided the government.  Mauritania signed a peace
  5. treaty with the Plosario Front in 1980 and resumed diplomatic
  6. relations with Algeria while breaking a defense treaty with
  7. Morocco.  Famine has struck repeatedly during the past decade.
